Some people believe that children are born with a ‘blank slate’ and that the development of their personality is determined by their experiences.
Others think that they are born already knowing what of life’s all about and it is as if they have lived before.
I tend to side with the thinking behind the scientific research that tells us development is a combination of the two – you may know the term Nature versus Nurture in which it is an accepted theory that development occurs with both elements in mind.
Simply put, our genetics and DNA represent the nature component and as they are predetermined aspects, we are born with such as eye colour.
On the flip side, development occurs via the environment around us and the experiences we have that help shape our personalities.
When I think about my work with children, I often reflect on which side of the ‘coin their individual personas are generated from; but in the end it is not easily defined and does not necessarily need to be either.
Whether we are born to fit in or stand out from the crowd, (it may sound cliché) it is what’s inside that counts, irrespective of how we appear to others.
The world is becoming more widely aware of the strength of the diversity of humans and animals and that each and everyone has a significant role to play in life.
People who have previously been excluded from what is considered ‘normal ‘because they have been, or are seen as different, are now being given encouragement to shine.
What is best about this, I think is the connection it brings to humanity as a collective, and also individually.
Instead of standing out from the crowd, there is an invitation to play by different rules or no rules at all!
Being accepted for who we are encourages softness in strength and promotes kindness and diversity in thinking.
One of the most important learnings from this is to place much higher value on connection and collaboration.
