During pregnancy, tiny babies are immersed in water. Knowing no different, there is a sense of safety and ease being protected in their liquid sac. Floating freely until they are ready to be born, they know no fear in this environment.
As they grow into toddlers they develop strength and awareness of the dangers of the world around them. Suddenly bodies of water can become potentially life threatening unless they are under the watchful eye of their parents and other adults around them keeping them out of harm’s way.
Living in a country that has water incorporated into many of our lifestyles many parents choose to have their children learn to swim from a very young age and is an enriching experience for both adult and child. Some people believe that it is quite natural and wish to educate their child to respect this potential danger before they can assume a fear about it on their own.
Learning any new skill of course takes practice, persistence and patience.
There are steps to be modelled and demonstrated, such as developing confidence to breathe underwater. Tools and equipment may need to be purchased to assist the learner. In the case of swimming and water safety, one obvious aid may be inflatable floaties, rings or pool noodles.
Gaining confidence and strategy, the child becomes proficient to swim unaided and feels ready to leave the confines of the props. They may graduate through the levels over time and even begin to take more risks to swim in deeper waters without having to rely on the safety ropes to navigate to the side of the pool.
Going even further they may learn how to assist another person how to get back to the safety of dry land if in distress.
Another life skill acquired is to stay calm even in deep water.
Giving presence of mind, they wont waste precious energy thrashing about in the water and putting themselves in further danger.
Becoming a small business owner could feel similar to diving into the deep end without a life-preserving ring for support. With access to books, an online and interactive forum and more, The Prosperity Project is the place to start getting your feet wet and blowing bubbles on the water before levelling up to stages where you could ace the high dive platform without a hitch!
